Avebury

Gazetteer > England > Wiltshire

Era

Neolithic

Description

A huge henge earthwork surrounds the village of Avebury, and contains the remains of two stone circles, surrounded by a third massive circle. Remnants of stone avenues can also be seen marching across the fields. No short paragraph can describe the size and splendour of Avebury - it is folly to try !

Finds

The finds at this site are too many to mention…. Excavations and treasure hunting at this site have been very common across the centuries…

Notes

The Avebury we see taday is largely due to the efforts of Alexander Keiller who purchased the land and restored much of it in the 1930s. Many of the stones were destroyed across time with the encouragement of the church, others were simply burried to remove them from sight - there to remain to this day !
